Application Guidelines

Deadline for Proposals: Around the end of January each year.

The Arts and Sciences Academic Summer Research (ASR) Program provides faculty with one month of summer salary and applicable benefits to pursue research and scholarly activities. Summer salary must be used during July or August. In addition, the +1 Supplement provides additional funding of up to $1,000 for scholarly-or research-related travel during the fiscal year. Travel funding becomes available July 1 and must be used by June 30 of the following year. Proposals must be for scholarly or research-related travel, which may include (but is not limited to) trips to archives, research facilities, or collaboration meetings; participation in an artistic exhibition or performance, or meetings with an external sponsor.

Eligible Faculty

  • Tenure and tenure-track faculty employed full-time in the College of Arts and Sciences during the entire academic year
  • In addition, two ASR +1 awards are reserved for non-tenure-track faculty

Ineligible Faculty:

  • Faculty who have received an ASR grant during any one of the past three, consecutive summers
  • Faculty with two months of support during June, July, or August from any other sources
  • Faculty who have not submitted deliverable reports for previous awards
  • Department Heads


Proposal Preparation Instructions

General Formatting:

  • Single spaced
  • Times New Roman font in 11 point or larger
  • 1-inch margins all around
  • Include applicant’s name and department in upper right corner of each proposal page
  • Number all pages at the bottom

ASR Proposal Documents

Project Description Limited to 2 pages not including CV or supplemental travel request

Include the following section headers:

  1. Project Title
  2. Projects Description Proposals must be written in plain English so scholars from other disciplines can understand the work being proposed. Use of technical jargon should be avoided.
  3. 3Expected Outcome An explicit deliverable may include a journal article, book chapter, artistic exhibition or performance, a monograph or the development of a grant proposal to an external sponsor.
  4. Anticipated and or pending summer support from other sources

Curriculum Vitae: Required limited to 2 pages

  • must include current and pending grants and publications for the past three years.

Optional +1 Travel Supplement: (limited to 1 page)

NOTE: this is a supplement to the ASR Proposal; you cannot apply only for +1 travel funding.

  • Include a description of your travel plans. Travel funding becomes available July 1 and must be used within one year or by June 30 of the following year.
  • Provide a simple budget that includes the total amount being requested (limited to $1,000)

Submission Instructions

Proposals should be submitted to Tory Lightfoot in Research Support Services (202 LSE) by the stated deadline. The deadline for ASR+1 proposals will generally be around the end of January.

Proposal Review and Award Notification

Proposals will be evaluated by an anonymous panel consisting or three or more faculty from Arts and Sciences. Ideally the review panel will equally represent the sciences, social sciences and arts and/or humanities.

Applicants and Department Heads will be notified of awards and declines around the last week of March.
