THOMAS WIKLE joined the OSU faculty in 1989 as an assistant professor and became Professor of Geography in 1998. As Associate Dean for Academic Programs he oversees curriculum, program development and instructional technology in the College. Prior to becoming Associate Dean he served as Head of OSU's Department of Geography (1994-2000). Dr. Wikle's research has explored a broad array of topics in human geography associated with emerging technologies such as the expansion of wireless telephone and FM radio systems.
Since 1989 he has authored or coauthored more than 100 papers, book chapters and other publications appearing in Geographical Review, Professional Geographer, International Journal of Geographical Information Systems, Environmental Management, and American Speech. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society, and U.S. National Park Service. He continues to teach courses in physical geography and the conservation of natural resources. Wikle has been recognized by the OSU Regents Distinguished Teaching Award (1996) and the National Council for Geographic Education’s Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award (1997).
In addition to teaching, research and administrative duties Dr. Wikle is currently International President of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the Geographic Honor Society with 180 college and university chapters.
